How to Protect You and Your Agency From Liability:

  • Work within your scope of responsibility.
  • Do your job.
  • Don’t give medical advice.
  • Know how to handle complaints.
  • Accept limitations.
  • Know your department’s policies.
  • Do not make unrealistic promises.
  • If you tell a caller you are going to do something, then do it.
  • Confirm critical data.
  • Make sure you have the address right. Echo critical data.
  • Do not place callers at risk.
  • “Stay on the phone.” Do not give advice unless trained.
  • Use discretion on taped line.



The focus for this course is on communication, management, apparatus, and functionality in handling calls related to fires. A firehouse tour and explanation of equipment is also included in this course.
